Mr. Mohan a 23 years old iraqi gentleman, suffering from Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a disease that he had acquired from birth which had resulted in him having extremely brittle bones and multiple deformed body parts. To get them corrected he had to undergo multiple surgical procedures during his adolescence, and had fought all the odds to achieve his passion, which was to become a graphic designer.

Failed treatment:

But unfortunately, fortune had its way and he sustained a “stress fracture” of his left thigh bone in a trivial injury (fall from stairs) in December 2014. He underwent multiple surgical attempts to “fix” the broken bone in various hospitals of the Middle East as each one of them failed, since his bones were not normal and the fracture could never heal.

Lost Hope:

As a result, his left thigh had become deformed, considerably short and agonisingly painful, had prevented him from walking without taking the affected leg off the ground for next 2 years, even his daily chores like going to the toilet had become cumbersome. He had to quit his job, had become enormously obese and as a result was losing hope. Referred by a friend, he came to Chennai in Jan 2017, and went to a hospital where an attempt to re-fix the bone was made, but 6 months after the surgery, he continued having pain. Referred by one of his relatives, with great hope to get back to his normal life, he came to MIOT international.

At MIOT:

After complete assessment by the doctors of MIOT international, it was observed that the fracture had still not healed and the morbid obesity that Mr. Mohan had developed, had been a big hurdle in the healing of the fracture as an optimum rehabilitation regime could never be executed properly in the previous post operative periods.

Hence according to the advice of the gastrointestinal surgeons of MIOT, he underwent “Bariatric surgery”, a surgery which is performed to aggressively treat morbid obesity.  Over the next 6 months, Mr. Mohan who was weighing 116kgs before the surgery had come down to 67kgs. He came back to MIOT, and was then planned for extensive “limb reconstruction”. The Trauma team performed Internal fixation surgery on his thigh bone along with augmentation with “Bone grafting”.

INTERNAL FIXATION is a surgical procedure that stabilizes and joins the ends of fractured (broken) bones by mechanical devices such as metal plates, pins, rods, wires or screws.

Recovery:

His post surgery period was uneventful. His rehabilitation with physiotherapy started the next day post surgery. He started walking with the support of crutches in a week’s time. Post surgery the deformity had disappeared, and the limb shortening had been “corrected”.

With appropriate physiotherapy, Mr. Mohan was back on his feet walking independently and painlessly after a long duration of 4 years. His patience had paid off and he was back to being a graphic designer again.
