Mr. Arun, a 26yr old male came to MIOT in August 2015 with pallor, breathlessness and Jaundice. He is an IT professional and the youngest son in his family. He was getting ready to tie the marriage knots by the end of 2015.

Mis- diagnosis:

When everything seemed to be happening perfectly in his life, he noticed by the mid of June that he was looking pale and feeling breathless frequently. He went to a near-by hospital where he was diagnosed to have Autoimmune Haemolytic Anaemia.  He was put on medications. Even after 2 months of treatment, there were no changes in his conditions.

Diagnosis at MIOT:

It was only after that in August 2015, he came to MIOT. On Bone marrow aspiration, he was diagnosed to have Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Adding more severity to the problem, he had a very unusual variant of AML, M6 which is very difficult to treat.

ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA (AML) is a type of blood cancer characterized by rapid growth of abnormal white blood cells that build up in the bone marrow and interfere with the production of normal blood cells.

Treatment:

Chemotherapy followed by Bone Marrow Transplant is the first treatment of choice, but due to his financial constraints, he was put on Chemotherapy alone. He underwent 4 cycles of chemotherapy which was over by March 2016. Already emotionally broken, cancellation of his marriage made things worse.

Relapse to Recovery:

He was on remission phase following Chemotherapy. But fate took toll again. By August 2016, there was relapse of the disease which was confirmed on peripheral smear examination.  So, he was re-started on low dose chemotherapy.

With no availability of suitable match for Bone Marrow Transplant, we came up with the revolutionary idea of doing transplant from a half matched donor. We chose his elder brother as donor, who had 6/10 matching and proceeded with Haplo-identical transplant.

HAPLO-IDENTICAL TRANSPLANT is a type of allogeneic transplant. It uses healthy, blood-forming cells from a half matched donor to replace the unhealthy ones. The donor is typically a family member.

Bone Marrow Transplant was done in the 1st week of September. He got discharged in 2 weeks and by November 2016, he was back to his usual self and started going to his work.
