This 88 year old Omani gentleman came to us with crutches – unable to walk or stand. He even refused to sit on a chair and only managed to crawl and sit on a floor. And with great difficulty when we made him stand we saw his knees collapsing and bent in a C shape outwards.

The patient was suffering with a severe deformity (both bending of the knees and arthritis) called Varus Deformity. He also had flexion deformity (inability to fully straighten the knee). He was known diabetic and had partial cataracts in both eyes.

Intra-operatively we saw and confirmed that the complete medial side of tibia was worn out – there was no cartilage left and he had a huge excavation and defect on one side of the knee.

So we performed a total knee replacement for him – both knees on different days using a special knee implant called a TC3 Knee. The deformity was now corrected and his knees are straight again. The patient is now able to stand and walk independently and has gone back to Oman happily.
