Mrs.  Meena, a 36 year lady came to MIOT on 15th Dec, 2016 with complaints of swelling and pain in her knee region. She is an Assistant Administrator from Pondicherry. She mentioned that she has had recurrent episode of patella (kneecap) dislocation since child hood which spontaneously en-locates.

She has been cautious about how she uses her knee to prevent any such episode to happen. In July of this year she had 1 such episode following which she had severe anterior knee pain. She had swelling of knee for 2 weeks. She also struggled to fully flex the knee at that point. Initially she ignored the problem.

Approach to MIOT:

But once the pain started intensifying, she was even unable to climb stairs or do her routine activities; she went to meet a local doctor. He advised her for a surgery in the knee region to stop the frequent dislocation.  Her friend suggested MIOT to her and since she had already heard that MIOT is good for Orthopaedics, she came to MIOT

Treatment:

Here, she was examined by the Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy specialist. She initially underwent a series of radiological investigations. She was diagnosed with left knee recurrent patellar dislocation and severe Trochlear Dysplasia. The doctor advised for Left knee Arthroscopic surgery and Trochleoplasty surgery.

A SUBLUXING PATELLA (kneecap) is a temporary, partial dislocation of the kneecap from its normal position in the groove in the end of the thigh bone (femur). TROCHLEAR DYSPLASIA is a risk factor for patella-femoral instability. TROCHLEOPLASTY involves reshaping the trochlear groove to provide increased patella-femoral stability.

Recovery:

She underwent the surgery on 16th August, 2017. Post-operatively she was stable and recovered well in the ICU. She was mobilized with the aid of a physiotherapist. Next day post-surgery, she started physiotherapy. In 3 days, she started walking with the help of crutches. She showed good progress. At a 6month review, she was walking independently, was able to do stairs comfortably and felt confident about her knee.
