This is the story of a 19yr old boy Mr. Cheng, from Aberdeen, Scotland. He came to MIOT on 15th June, 2017 with complaints of pain and fatigue in the right thigh region. He is a 2yr Mechanical student and a passionate football player.

2months back, he sustained an indirect injury to his Knee muscle while playing foot ball. When he was trying to kick the ball, his foot got caught in the ground. He felt a popping sensation in the knee region, following which he developed a swelling in the anterior aspect of the right thigh. He consulted a local Doctor next day and was told that he might have strained his muscles. He was advised rehabilitation with physiotherapy.

In a month’s time, he noticed bunching of the muscles in the front of his thigh. The Doctor referred him to a specialist. Meanwhile he tried going back to sports. He noticed while playing, his thigh fatigue sooner than normal. His family started worrying about him condition, but he was not ready to quit football. A family friend had referred them to go to MIOT.

Approach to MIOT:

At MIOT, he was examined by the Arthroscopic and Sports Medicine Specialist. Following MRI and Ultrasound scan, it was evident of a complete tear of Rectus Femoris muscle (one of the four quadriceps muscles of the human body, situated in the middle of the front of the thigh).

The Doctor discussed the various treatment options including non operative rehabilitation with the patient. Mr. Cheng was keen on operative intervention. On further discussion with his mother, he was taken up for surgery on 28th June, 2017. The surgery involved re attachment of the muscle back to its normal attachment.

Recovery:

Post-operatively he was stable and recovered well in the ICU. He was mobilized with the aid of a physiotherapist the next day post surgery and was made to walk with the help of elbow crutches.

Back to normalcy:

He showed good progress. He was discharged on 01.07.2017. 2weeks post surgery, he came for a review. The Doctor advised him to continue physiotherapy for a month. After a month, Mr.Cheng was able to walk by himself. In 3 months time, he was able to run and get back to him own-self. At the 6months review, he was very fit and had already started training for his game.
